They are generally the same thing...

In modern PC terms they are the same. But in old technology, you might have token ring LANs or other technologies.

Generally if it's an RJ45 port (clear plastic like a big (US) telephone plug with 8 wires then it's ethernet over UTP.

But that doesn't mean it's automatically compatible as there are different specifications that are mostly compatible... if set up right:
10 base T (10bT), 100 base T, 100 base TX, 1000 base T.
100baseTX is 8 wires used - but will connect as 10bT to a 4 wire ethernet. All others are 4 wires used physical structure.

No.

Routers have LAN ports to connect to multiple PCs, Network Interface Cards have an Ethernet Port to connect to things like routers.

But they do look the same!

those are a similar project. telephone ports at the instant are not "lan" ports. telephone ports are RJ-12, lan/ethernet ports are RJ-40 5. there is not any converter from telephone/modem jack to ethernet port. The old laptop desires an ethernet card which could have a lan/ethernet/rj-40 5 jack. "Lan" ability community area community, and those use Ethernet as their protocol.

Yes. LAN = Local Area Network. That port on the back of your computer is there so you can take Ethernet Cat 5 cable and plug into either a cable modem or a network switch.

Ethernet is one type of cable(the most commonly used) for using your LAN, so yes, your Ethernet Ports are LAN ports. However, the LAN port probably refers to the ports that are in your router.
However, Ethernet can be used to other things than LAN(Local Area Network) AND LAN ports can be something other than Ethernet(although, nowadays they are usually ethernet).
