If I am chatting with someone is it legal for them to record it?

If I am having a private internet chat, is it legal for the other party to capture teh conversation and keep t for future reference if I don'tknow that it's being "recorded.".

If it was being done via telephone it would be illegal without my consent.

Most of the chatting programs keep the data in their cache, and all you need to do is to save the cache. So by default all conversation is recorded. whether it is legal or illegal that I do not know
