Hi. When I am lodging a cheque in to my bank account. Do I sign the back of it?

No i've never been asked to do this!

Usually if the cheque is made out to someone else you used to get that person to sign the back of the cheque so it could be paid into your account...this was well before all cheques were 'crossed' and made payable to payee only...haven't had to do it for a number of years, in fact decades

You won't be required to sign on the back of the cheque if the cheque is to be deposited into your account. However, I would suggest you write your name, account number and telephone number on the back of the cheque to prevent fraud.

No, not needed if the cheque is depositted for clearing.If it is for cash withdrawal from bank usually they may ask for discharge.Legally speaking discharge is substitute for a receipt.Secondly for protecting your interest,that the genuine customer only gets money.
The Banking law is silent but it is a banking custom mostly prevalent in commonwealth countries.
