If you can't arrange a lateral transfer with your current employer, do a lot of research on the job market in your field. Buy some Arizona newspapers and do some online searches to see what's out there. See if the chamber of commerce in the city where you plan to live can help.

It depends on where you are now, first. If you plan on moving to Arizona, is it a long haul or are you in a neighbouring State? If the latter, it could be easier to find a pied a terre there first then go job-hunting. Moving from the otherside of the continent would be much different and, unless you are used to Freelance work and biz, I would look for a job in your own field before going anyplace. Is there an ulterior motive for choosing Arizona? Why not Florida or even Canada?
Perhaps you could go back-packing where you like.
Good luck with your decisions.
