The lane is supposed to be an overtaking lane only and the speed limit is exactly the same as the rest of the motorway.... 70mph...........

but try telling that to the people who race down it doing way in excess of the speed limit, and don't move out of the lane for anything!!

The speed limit for all lanes of a motorway is 70mph. unless there are temporary lower limits in force due to weather, roadworks or an accident. The outside (right lane in UK) is intended as an overtaking lane and vehicles should pull in to the left as soon as possible, but with the congestion on many motorways it has become necessary for drivers to fill all three lanes,or more,in order to accommodate the number of vehicles and to keep moving. With the cu rent congestion the speed limits get a bit hypothetical.

the speed limit is 70mph for cars 60 for artic trucks for all the lanes. This is not the fast lane. however trucks are not meant to use this lane unless they are overtaking a vehicle in the centre lane.

Second and third lanes are for overtaking only. The maximum speed limit is 70mph, however, current speed restrictions (due to roadworks, congestion, accident, etc.) need to be taken into consideration.
