Do you remember having to collect money from strangers that relied on you to hurl a wad of newspaper at their homes?
Do you remember the alzheimers patients in the convalsecent home that would talk your ear off if you gave them half a chance out of politeness and decency?

Do you remember getting shaken down for your pocket change by the gang kids living on welfare?

Do you remember balancing a load of papers on your 2 wheeled bicycle and NOBODY wore a helmet?

Do you remember doing all of this so you could order some radio or a lamp out of a catalog?

What the hell were our parents thinking?

The owner collected the money so no problems for us there.

No shake downs, though. Our sling shots took care of the dogs and the other undesirables. After a while when they saw us coming they would avoid us like the plague. The Sunday additions were heavy for sure. We didn't use bikes we walked, the owner would leave the list and papers in strategic locations for us.

My radio was a Heath kit, still have the diagram and don't remember what happened to the radio. We had fun building that radio and placing the various antennas we experimented with. Always got in trouble for staying up late talking to folk in languages we did not understand.

My parents actually told us what they thought, they'd say work will make a decent person of you.

Have a pleasant day.

God, I led a sheltered life. The place where I come from, though a city of 15,000, was quite insular. We never experienced any such thing. My brother delivered newspapers and I recall my Mom having to pay for a lot of the customers so that he would have the right amount of money to send into the head office. I think it lasted one summer and my Mom just lost it. She found him, one day, spending the money from collecting at the arcade.
