Thank you for making me really think about why I never use the word "sin." I realize that it, & its synonyms refer to acts that violate religious, or moral standards. Yet to go a step further, sin has an exclusively religious connotation, referring to any act specifically proscribed by religious DOCTRINE. Perhaps it's in my DNA (!) but I just can't "go" there. A wrong or a misdeed would better express my feelings, (although these may also imply a religious context), they have a wider ethical context. Wrong as hurting or injuring someone. If I were to stray from my moral standards & cause harm, I would consider it "wrong" but not a sin. Perhaps even "error" as this suggests an unintentional mistake rather than a deliberate choice. This seems a simple matter of semantics, but it isn't to me. "Doctrine" & "dogma" seem a very authoritative bundle of "rules" that all believers must accept. I obviously need more "wiggle" room. So, what is sin to me, personally? It's a word I don't think, or use. But, I would never debate, or disrespect those who do.

A word, an energy, a turn of speech and thought, and perceived reality, which is no more than a means to denote causation, that is, cause and effect, reflection and experiencing, as it relates to sentient beings.
In the Near East this is known as the dynamics that are Karma, and in China known as Yin and Yang.
While sin is a conception existing for some 2000 years or so, these other two are thousands and thousands of years of establishing.
Are they realities? -- absolutely.
Sin denotes the demonstration and consequence of breaching Divine Law, under which Free Will and the Law of Harmonics fall and are but subordinates to, and which are inexorably tied to still other and numerous High Laws of both Nature and the Divine.

The only real sin is believing we are separate and apart from God. That we have a will of our own. we are the "doer". All other "sins" arise from this one. Once we receive the blessings of a Christed Saint, Shaktipat, baptism in spirit, we have fulfilled the law and the law no longer applies to us. No longer a "sinner". Though there is a process whereby the mind is renewed, old habits and concepts erased. one watching would think you were still a sinner but during this period there is no sin attributed to you.

My definition of sin...
Another word for "human bahavior that deliberately, physically, harms people."
I don't believe The New Testament is holy. Nor do I believe that just because an incredibly peaceful, helpful, and unselfish person (as like that a person reasonably can be without getting crucified) walked the earth two thousand years ago (and got crucified...he went a little overboard)
and did unselfish acts for free among the poor and downtrodden, that that makes that person the offspring of a fantastigorical, fictional, bodiless creator of the universe.
It makes him cooler than Fonzie...
But not supernatural...
What I do think he was right about is that "sin" only comes from the inside to the outside...
In other words...
Only people think (inside) of bad things, and do them (outside) to someone else, who then passes that bad thing on like a torch...
Love is exactly like that, too...
Which torch will YOU pass on...?

If you look closely at the laws in the bible they are primarily to stop one person from hurting another. Since there are many different forms of hurting someone, both dirrectly and indirectly, I would have to say that a sin is any action or the want to commit any action that can and has the potenial to cause harm to another human being.
Hope this helps.

Sin is any act or thought that is not exhibiting Love to God, others, or yourself. It's really that simple...
yet so many religions will create long lists of things they consider sinful. They keep their rules and cast judgment on those who don't, but they don't follow the only rules that matter. They do not Love.
Peace.

Sin means missing the mark, and since that is impossible, then the idea of sin is a lie.
You cannot get it wrong, and you never get it done.
Life is eternal and all is well. Have a great life!

I believe a sin is when you act contrary to your morals and beliefs in a way which you can't justify to yourself. Only you known when you have sinned. Not everything is black and white. Take the example of the commandment 'thou shalt not kill', for me personally I would not consider helping to euthenaise a loved one who was in chronic pain and wanted to die to be a sin.

*The following reflect my views as far as what I consider sins:
Do not kill, everyone is entitled to their futures and life. (I don't see how taking the life of another person could ever be justified, even using moral relativism.)
Do not steal, ask if you want something that does not belong to you. Do not lie. Keep your body pure both from greed (such as lust), and from intoxicants which damage it and alter your perception. Finally, using someone purely as a means would be a sin in my point of view.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.
With love in Christ.
