The issue is that i had glued the paper strips outside the mould. So the mould, in effect, is inside the papier mache sculpture. Now would heating resolve this?

Would it help if you try to heat it with a hair dryer? It might come out greasy, but it should keep its shape.
Since the item is on the outside of the mold, I suggest making a lengthwise cut to get it off, then tape it back together on the inside.

check the shape of your mold, make sure it's opening is large enough, then try heating it.
