There are simply no fundmetal science that could accomplish the technological advance you are talking about. Metal detector works by running electrical currents aroudn the subject's body to detect any disruptions in the current, and therefore the weapon. X-Ray detectors work by bombarding the subject with low level radiations, and foreign objects like weapons can be detected with different amount of radiations that is filtered through the subject.

To detect a weapon 5 feet away or more without conspicuous mechanism is just not possible at this point. There are a few possibilities in the scientific community, but they are still at least a decade away before those advances become plausible in detecting weapons at a distance.

The closest thing to this is back-scatter technology. It is a special form of x-ray technology. It can view under clothes, inside of buildings, and in vehicles.

There are even backscatter vans. They look not much different from common delivery trucks and can find contraband in vehicles.
