I have a honda cb400t that I want to carb synch. If I use a dial type guage, how strong a vacuum does it need to be able to read on the scale?

you cannot sync them up by putting your hands over the exsaust pipe.

Since synching carbs is only actually measuring differences in vacuum between carbs, an actual guage giving a pressure reading is not necessary.

So building something such as this: http://www.powerchutes.com/manometer.asp
would accomplish synching just fine.

The cost to make this is under $2 U.S. and all the parts are readily available everywhere.

One change I suggest is using 2-stroke oil for the gauge as it is blue and easier to read than most other fluids.

For 4-cylinder engines, you can sync two carbs at once in whatever rotation the service manual suggests.

Gauges aren't really necessary to sync. carbs on a twin.
While the bike is at idle, put your left & right hands at the end of the mufflers to feel the exhaust pressure. Sync the carbs until the pressues are equal.
Just trying to save you some money.

Motion Pro makes a very good set of Carb sync Gauges. And they are not overly expenseive. Mercury gauges are nice, and very accurate, but they can be very costly. And if you only plan to use them one or two times. Then you may not want to pay a couple hundred dollars for a set.
