What is best to use on large weeds that have taken over a back garden like a jungle.
They are very thick and I want to kill them off (there is no grass underneath..no sun gets to the ground)
I had a go with roundup ages ago but it didn't seem to do anything...any ideas????

There wont be grass if you use roundup! Cut them down and mow regularly, even brambles, you will be amazed how quickly a lawn forms. The reason is grass is one of the few plants whose growth parts are at the base, not at the tip, so they dont get cut off.

Round up will just allow pernicious perrenials to take over the bare patches that are left. Mow, mow, mow

You have to apply herbicides really precisely, and several times to get the right results.

I prefer an organic approach, just because I don't like putting poisons on the lawn.

Go through the back garden and make sure there are no rocks or branches hiding in the grass. Then mow the lawn (if possible, if not use a weed-eater -- you can rent one) as low as you can get it. If you are willing to put up with ugly for awhile, cover the ground with a black tarp. If not, lay down newspapers (three or four sheets) and cover with grass clippings (OK, this is semi-ugly). Either way, it will cut off all the sun and some of the water to the weeds, and they will die. Leave it like that for six weeks.

If you use grass clippings, make sure new weeds don't start growing in the grass compost!

After six weeks, get a roto-tiller and plow it all under. Wait a week, and plow again (this will get the weed seeds that sprout). Then, spread with grass seed, water and hope for the best.

If you can live with weeds, but just hate the jungle, chop it down once with a weed-eater, and then keep it short (three or four inches) the whole summer with a lawnmower. Many weeds are annuals, and if they can't make seeds, they will die away over the winter.

There's no easy way to get rid of them. I'm sure the Round-up website has info about how to get rid of stuff "for good," but I think you'll be buying round-up every year that way. My husband uses it on the fields, and he doesn't have much success with it unless he plows things up as well (there are tons of weeds in the ditches next to the fields).

As it sounds like your going to want your lawn back after all this. I think the best idea might be to cut all the weeds down maybe with a strimmer if there really overgrown and dig up the plot and returf with some nice new grass and then use preventative treatments in the future so it doesnt get to that stage :)

First, have another go with the round up. After they brown off (about two weeks), dig them up with a fork or pull them out (whatever's easiest) and then lay thick newspaper over the ground, overlapping it each way by three inches. Peg it down and leave for at least a month, to stop any sprouts. If they're soft weeds that don't spread by cuttings of themselves, you could prolly get away with just mowing them down and heaping newspaper over the top.

Yes- use 2-4-D, available at any home depot or lowes. Spray only what you want to kill, in a hand held sprayer. Don't spray what you want to keep. You may have to do this 2-3 times to achieve the desired effect. Both Scotts and Ortho make a good 2-4D killer. Regards-Bob. PS-Note that you have to repeat the treatment several times, not once. It will work if you keep at it. If your problem is widespread, use a hose end sprayer. Roundup will work, but you have to be patient. Spray-wait 2-3 weeks, spray again, wait 2-3 weeks, spray again. All good things come to those who wait.!!

You need to dig them up by the roots - hard work I know but it is the only way to really get rid of them. Do a little at a time and you will soon see results. As there is no grass underneath it shouldn't be too hard to turn the soil if you use a large gardening fork.

Time and regular weeding....sorry

If you can get the back garden weeded, then put down lawn and mow regularly should keep most of them at bay... or at least it will look tidy.
