Water soluble (washable) bases are often derived from polymers of ethylene glycol (PEGS); these will absorb water and ingredients dissolved in the water. Ointment bases are usually pharmacologically inert but may entrap water and serve to keep the skin from dying or to provide an emollient protective film.
DermabaseTM Oil-in-Water Emulsion Base. Suitable for incorporation of a wide variety of medicinal agents. Useful in alleviating dry skin where a water-washable base is indicated.

AquabaseTM Absorbent Hydrophilic Base. A stable, unscented, preservative-free anhydrous hydrophilic ointment base that may be used alone or combined with water to form a water-in-oil emulsion. Suitable for incorporation of a wide variety of medicinal agents.
