I'm not the best flyer for a couple of reasons:
- I don't like the odds of crash survival rates
- I don't like the feeling of helplessness that I get on a plane - I'm not a good passenger, I like to be in control
- I've probably watched far too much footage and movies involving air disasters
- It's a long way down!

My first time flying there were lots of reasons I was afraid. First it was just a strange new thing for me, something I'd never done. Besides that I was (and still am) pretty ignorant when it comes to flying, I don't know how one works, I didn't know what all the noises were, I didn't know if that was a 'normal sound'.
The idea of flying is pretty strange when you think about it. Lets strap ourselves in to a metal tube with a bunch of strangers and go miles into the air.
There's the lack of controle, you have apsolutly no control over what's happening, you just have to sit there and trust that the plane is going where you intended it to, and that it will make it in one piece.
Having to sit in close quarters with a stranger(s) for a few hours is really uncomfortable.
I'm sure I could think of more reasons, but I'm going to stop rambling. I still don't like flying even though I do 1-2 times a year.

Previous experiments that may or may not be obvious to that person. Sometimes little things that would normally have no connection to flying, but when paired up with something that symbolizes flying, can leave a person scarred for life. It's the same with any other fear.

People are not afraid of flying. They are afraid of crashing. lol
Personally I always ask for a seat at the back of the plane, well, I never heard of a plane backing into a mountain.

1) accidents. They have happened. I guess you could add terrorism to this area
2) the turbulence (sp?). WHen the plane shakes, drops, bumps.. makes them nervous
3) irrationality. Afraid for no reason - just think they're going to die.
4) not enough booze? LOL just kidding
5) sensationalism of any little problem by the media and exaggeration by movies and television.
6) lack of knowledge about it's saftey (goes with #5)

The effects of Inertia, Vertigo, Confinement and to show Blind Faith in Science.................and the skill of another Human Being (Who is probably drunk, stoned, insane or feeling really depressed: if not suicidal !!!!)
Try to get Your hands on the old "Shelley Berman" monologue about flying. He was joking, but for some it was closer to the truth than You could imagine.
