Accepting the idea that consciousness is something that can be located in the body and not just a concept for describing a brain function then I can't see how it could be anywhere else than in the brain. Almost anything else has been successfully transplanted or amputated at some case without taking consciousness with it.

It's not. Consciousness is an abstract concept, like love or beauty. It's not located in time or space.

In the larger context, Consciousness is the source of all physical manifestation. The world arises 'within' Consciousness much the way a thought arises 'within' the human mind.

The body itself is dead. Consciousness is temporal, something assessed only by the manipulation of materials from point A to Point B.

Consciousness may exist in a body only if the environment is firtile for it to exist, and it will flourish in the right proverbial "ecosystem".

The brain is the easy answer, but there have been documented medical cases of people who have had organ transplants and have acquired memories, dreams and deja Vu experiences from their donors. This could imply that the brain is more or less a central operating system for consciousness, or at least facets of it.

I think consciousness is not even located in the human body because it comes from within the spirit. What humans don't know is that the body, the spirit, and the mind are completely different things. Our body is something that can live on through this hell called earth temporarily until we die, the spirit is what lead us to this life to begin with because our spirit has been here (our spirit is what has us coming back until we learn our lesson & makes God content), and our mind is what stores information like our choices, our decisions, and earthbound information that can only be used here. Our consciousness is in our spirit and we must use our mind to make the proper decisions and choices.

you and your body are one. there is no you apart from it. a part of that body is your brain/mind. Consciousness is not something physical that exists in the body, but is rather an "epiphenomenon" that arises out of the substance of the brain. Just as flame does not exist in the absence of combustible material, consciousness does not exist without the brain/body. all the signals from your senses, and associations with past experiences, etc... become an awareness of your self in your mind. from this awareness that arises out of the material of your mind/body you are able to act back down upon your mind/body with volitional decision making or conscious willful behavior.

so... contrary to the behaviorist assertion consciousness does exist and is not merely an illusion. without a conscious mind we have no free will. without free will we are merely a bundle of neurons reacting to the environment around us. experience (something we would not have without consciousness) tells us otherwise.

on a similar note... i disagree with the "Christian" & other religious notions that consciousness is separate from the body and exists in a ghostly "soul" contained in the body. The Soul is the whole, and does not exist without the body. Humans are not immortal and no part of us can live past the death of the body. The only hope for life after death is in the resurrection of the body. Thank God that is exactly what happened with Jesus and will happen with all of us humans!

I think that consciousness is located at the brain. The mental skills and coordination is found in the brain. But the conscience and emotion is done by the brain but planted in the heart

You'd think that it would have to be in the mind.

Whenever someone is commited as "insane" it is a mutation in the brain that causes it. Insanity could easily be the lack of human consciousness, thinking you are not even a real...or your morals would be nonexistant or wrong compared to social standards. But then that could just be the societies interperatation on your thoughts.

Who knows?

The brain seems like a pretty decent neighbourhood...but I suppose consciousness is from the mind/soul/spirit/being & I don't know whether that resides in any specific body part...

The "human body" is "us."
What we call "consciousness" is an illusion...
But not an un-important one...
Just because something is an "illusion," does not mean it's not a "wonderful" illusion...
But to answer the "location" part of your question...
I, myself (no pun intended) "feel" like I'm located in my eyeballs...

Nowhere, consciousness is not an objective material, it is only the correct reaction from the objective world.
