Normally it heats up a heat exchanger and transfers the heat to the air in the house. A fan will come on blow the hot air through the ductwork and distribute warm air throughout the house. A thermostat will determine when the house is warm enough according to the setting and shut the furnace off.

There are several kinds of furnaces, but I'm going to assume your talking about a home heating furnace. Simply put, a furnace heats air which is then released into the house either by an open floor vent or through ducts by air movement from a fan.

Burns fuel to produce heat to warm an enclosed space. Fuel may be gas, oil, or coal. Typical gas furnace mixes natural gas (primarily methane) with air, burns it in tubes, and exhausts the combustion products through a flue. A fluid (usually air) passes over the tubes to absorb the heat for distribution throughout the space. Modern gas furnaces can extract almost all of the heat from combustion, so that the combustion products are cool enough to be expelled through a plastic pipe.
