Many of us are able to talk the talk, but do you walk the walk when it comes to issues of character. Do you measure up to the same standards that you hold others to in terms of your philosophy for living.

Being a "good person" is highly subjective in the world. What constitutes a "good person" so that the individual can determine if they are talking the talk, or walking the walk?

"Live and let live" is problematic. For example, if someone wants to hurt you, should I simply walk away -- I would be letting that person "Live and let live." If someone robs you, should I live and let live?

i don't really set standards of expected behavior for others; i don't talk the talk much. i'd like everybody including myself to fit my perception of good morality and fairness, but i don't expect them to and i know i don't either. i'm comfortable without standards like that. i accept that humans are far from perfect.

You ask some tough questions mister!
As far as being a moral person yes I walk the walk as well as talk the talk. When it comes to being good to myself unfortunately however, sometimes I give better advice than I take. I find it easier to tell other people to love themselves & not compare to others & achieve peace than to actually put it in practice.
Live and let live as you describe it sounds like turn the other cheek & I'm afraid I'm a Christian who doesn't subscribe to that little maxim. Sometimes self-defense is necessary. If someone hurts me or someone I love, I won't just stand there & take it. I will defend myself by any means necessary. But I would never deliberately hurt an innocent person. Cruelty is unforgiveable to me. I could never knowingly be cruel to someone who had done nothing wrong. If however, someone hurt a member of my family, I would tear him to shreds. I am fiercely protective of those I love. I don't think that makes me a bad person...I have a little vigilante-ism in me. As a kid, I wanted to be Wonder Woman or the Bionic Woman. I wanted to get revenge on the bad guys...Tee hee. I still think it would be cool to be a superhero. To have the power to correct society's ills... I have a strong sense of justice & I don't think the legal system does a very good job in many cases...

Yes.
I "practice" what I "preach..."
But these are the only things I "preach..."
1. Non-violence (sticks and stones may break my bones...so please don't use sticks and stones...)
2. Whenever you're driving a car...plan ahead, know ahead of time your position among other cars, and the timing of the events forming up ahead, and act before you have to...keep an awareness of your blind spots so you always know if you could change without looking over your shoulder ahead of time...excelerate (floor it!)when getting on the freeway to be going faster than they are by the time you merge, that way they can't possibly rear-end you, and you prevent traffic jams...and DO NOT tap your breaks during rush-hour, just take your foot off the gas, and the car will slow down enough, 'cause there's no rule that says your foot always has to be touching one of the foot pedals...and understand that the shortest route is not always the quickest, depending on the time of day or night you're driving...and yellow light means "floor it, you're missing the green!"
3. Come up with "your own" beliefs based on knowledge AND "your own" experience. Do not simply believe in something 'cause that's what you were brain-washed to believe by your parents, teachers, preachers, or politicians...
4. If the opportunity arises (metaphorically only) kill the entire flock of birds with one stone...in other words...if there's a more-efficient way of doing something that you're aware of, do not continue to do the less efficient way just because you're "comfortable" doing it that way...
5. Read, read, and more reading...if you don't read, you won't get smarter (or more-efficient).
6. Physical exercise beats the hell out of pills any day of the week (much harder, though, but the results are a thousand times more effective and long-lasting...
7. Do NOT "judge" people. It's all right to form an opinion (flattering or not) but don't think any "one" thing a person does is a reflection of their character. We all flub up occasionally (even Dr. Phil) and even if you are "without" sin in a certain area...do NOT cast stones ever (see preach #1) (my ex-girlfriends hate that one)
8. You don't "have" to have a fear of some higher power to have a reason to be "good." Goodness "really" is it's own reward...
9. Understand that it's the wise and strong of the world whose duty it is to "protect" the mentally challenged and weak, not disdain them (but it is o.k. to be frustrated by their dumb and dumber actions...)
10. Teach by example...(practice what you preach) (and don't hold anyone up to "any" standard...you don't have a "standard-setting" license...

Yes I talk the talk and I definitely walk the walk, always taught if you talk the talk you had better walk the walk.
I am the person I want to be, and while I will listen to others views, beliefs and opinions and take from them what I may, in the end I will still follow the path that I have set for myself.

I follow my philosophy for living, being positive, but sometimes I slip up. I am human you know so I would say I walk the walk often but not all the time.
