You are a novice or beginner. Play. Lose many games. Buy and read beginner books.
Quick lesson grab the center. Put a Knight in the corner, It can go to 2 squares. In the center it can go to 8 squares.
Put a Bishop in the corner. It can go to 7 squares. (It can't go where it stands. On one of the center four squares it can go to 12.
All pieces, except Rooks care where they are. (Pawns are not pieces.)
Also if the fight is on the left it is easier to get to if yo control the center. Otherwise you pieces might be in strong positions on the right that don't help you.
Lesson #2 all "rules" are correct only 65% of the time, don't follow them slavishly.
Don't start an attack until you are castled unless that is the right thing to do.:)
Knight on rim is grim, unless it works.:)

Chess is a game of symmetry and balance. Think about that for a moment. Its played on an 8X8 square with pieces that have certain properties and values. There is an opening, development and closing to the game. Believe it or not, most games are won or lost in the first 4-7 moves. The opening is the most critical aspect because it is in those initial moves where you move the pieces into position so they can exert the most influence directly on your opponent's king. There are a number of easy-to-follow books on chess openings and development. There are also books that show a particular board situation and challenge you to solve it by checkmate in x-number of moves. Learning the principles of good, effective openings and how to recognize opportunities when they are evident will make you a much better player. Hit the books, pay attention to what is happening on the board and you will become a better chess player before too long. Good luck.

Chess game is basically divided into 3 phases: opening, middle game, end game.
You may follow my ways of learning chess:
1. Learn the end game tactics. (easiest) Sometimes you are close to winning the game, you just miss it. Learn how to win using pin, double attack, decoy, interception, back rank weakest, etc. Learn how to win with very few pieces like one pawn to a king and a pawn.
2. Try to master few opening. Try to learn few famous trap. Learn it so that you wouldnt fall into it. Dont hope your opponent would fall into your trap(most trap has a fall back, it only works on weak player) Dont try to master every opening at the beginning. Follow the rules to put every piece into right place before you start to attack. Development comes first.
3. Middle game is the hardest. Middle game skill involve the steps to create some advantages from nothing, or convert slight advantages into clear advantages. Hardly any master starts to attack when they have only slight advantages.
*** Dont try to attack when you have slignt disadvantages, try to level it first.
4. Full game analysis only come last when you need to see the flow from one phase to another. In certain middle game you can exchange pieces to reach a sure win end game pattern.
My final advice is to learn from your lose game. Never repeat a same mistake. You also may learn from a winning game (only very good player managed to do so)

1. Learn basic skills such as not falling for the four move mate, not giving free pieces.
2. Learn how to notate your games. ie., write down the moves so that you can go over them later.
3. If you know someone better than you, have them go over your game and point out better moves. If you cant find such a person, buy a chess program like Fritz and enter your moves and it will show you better moves.

Go to the newspaper and practice the chess plays and also go to the library. Look up books on chess with different strategies and firm up your moves. Then get a good friend or
chess player and start practicing. Practice makes perfect.
