I want my outdoor pots to match parts of the house but none of the stores have the colour I want. Can I paint any type of pot and what kind of paints for them do I use?

Use unglazed terra cotta pots. Go to a craft store and get a water-based sealer and seal the pots (and saucers) before you begin to paint. This will keep the salts in the soils from leeching through the clay and ruining your paint job.
Paint the pots with acrylic paints. (Tempera will never seal properly and oil paints with kill your plants).
Put a couple more coats of the sealer over the paint and let dry thoroughly. Enjoy.

There is a specific brand of paint formulated just for painting outdoor items like pots.

Patio Paint is a brand by DecoArts. I have found it available in Michael's Craft store in the plant section by the terra cotta pots. It is an acrylic paint in the little 2 ounce bottles. I believe it also comes in spray paints, but I haven't used those.

The website is : http://www.decoart.com/cgi-bin/Products.cgi?Patio_Paint

They also have a listing by state of where you can find their products at: http://www.decoart.com/cgi-bin/Purchase.cgi?Retail

I know that the Patio Paints are specially formulated for outdoor use, and the pots I used it on still look good several years after painting.

Hope this info helps you.

Use terra cotta pots. (unglazed ceraminc pots).

Plastic or glazed pots will not take paint.

You'll need to seal them with urethane or the like to keep the paint from chipping and peeling and running.

Tempra, household, indoor/outdoor paints...they would all work, and can be cleaned up with water. Even oil paints - if you've got the thinners you need to deal with those.

terra cotta pots work well to paint on. I've used acrylic paint to do my own pots. Its water proof and does not fade.

Fantastic idea. Yes, you can paint any pot, even plastic. The easiest why is to visit your local paint shop. Just tell them what your wishing to paint and what it is made of, and they can give show you all the products available.
