If you are talking about the "flexible" type metal watchbands, its actually pretty easy.
Flip the band inside out, so you can see the underside of it. (you don't even have to take the band off the watch)
Now, if you stretch the band a few times, while looking at the edge of it, you should see a small connecting piece between the lower link, and the upper. To get to this piece, you only need to pry the end of the band up. Then you can remove that small piece...its actually the spring link.
Do that to both edges of the band, and you will have seperated the band. Move over however many links you wish to take out, and repeat the process.
Then you simply take the two exposed ends, and reconnect them with the spring linkage, and fold the ends of the link back in place.
The only tools you will need are perhaps a small pair of needlenose pliers, and a small screwdriver, or blade edge of some sorts, to pry the tabs out on the links. A magnifying glass might help you see it all better, hehehe.
Now... if you are referring to the "chain" link type metal bands....then its not so easy. I would recommend taking this type of band to a jewelry store and ask them to resize it for you. That post that runs through the links is press fitted....not something you can just simply pop out, with hand tools.
Good Luck

You actually can't, unless you have the proper tools.
If you bring it back to the store, with the receipt, some places may let you change it for free, others will reccommed a special shop to get it changed.
