Why are the wingspans of birds a consideration in determing the spacing between parallell wires in a power line?

When birds sit on power lines they are actually trying to gain warmth from the electricity that passes through their bodies. If a bird just happen to flap its wings and touch another power line while on a different power line, it will complete a circuit with another power line and its body. This electrocutes the bird (especially visible with two power lines of different current) making it into a nice charred meal. Basically, knowing the wingspan of the birds that might sit on the wires and setting the parallel wires farther apart than that will inevitably save the lives of countless birds.

I assume that it is because they want birds to be able to fly between them without getting entangled.
