Is it abnormal if it only happens sometimes?

Depends on how much air the baby swallowed while feeding. Some babies will spit up more than others, but some won't burp at all.

Now if the baby is spitting up more than just a little and does so a LOT, then you might need to consult your pediatrician. My daughter would spit up ALL her formula and it was almost as if she was vomiting. I found out from the pediatrician that she was lactose intolerant and had to switch her to a soy based formula. Once I did that, the amount she spit up was very, very little and she was able to keep the formula down.

And no it is NOT abnormal if the baby only spits up sometimes. Like the others have said, it depends on the baby. But babies are very resilient, so don't worry!
Hope this helps!

Depends on how much they are spitting up and when this started and how old your baby is. I thought my son was just spitting up. Then I noticed this wasn't just spitup after I had to change my clothes after every feeding. My son was diagnosed with pyloric stenosis. Sometimes it all came up sometimes it didn't. This was because he was just at the beginning stages of it. Your maternal instinct will kick in and you will know if you need to take him to the pediatrition or not. My son's pediatrition denied it the first time I took him. Then 3 days later I took him back and they did a Ultrasound and found it. Be persistant if you truely think something is wrong. My son developed Pyloric Stenosis earlier than the expected range of 2 weeks to 2 months. So they was actually sure. Also first born baby boys are 90% more likely to get Pyloric Stenosis than girls or second born baby's.

Pyloric stenosis is a narrowing of the pylorus, the lower part of the stomach through which food and other stomach contents pass to enter the small intestine. When an infant has pyloric stenosis, the muscles in the pylorus have become enlarged to the point where food is prevented from emptying out of the stomach. Most infants who develop pyloric stenosis are usually between 2 weeks and 2 months of age - symptoms usually appear during or after the third week of life. It is one of the more common causes of intestinal obstruction during infancy that requires surgery.

Good Luck with the Baby.

Some spitting up is normal when baby burps. He she may have eaten a bit to much. If it is happening every time you burp baby, then there could be a problem like reflux, but if it is happen say one out of three meals then baby is probably fine. If you are worried just call the doctor. I am sure he she will be happy to answer your question.

My daughter very rarely spit up, so I don't speak from experience but a friend of mine was told by her midwife that sometimes babies get gas bubbles from swallowing too much air when eating. When a baby spits up, supposedly it is new milk that is sitting on top of the gas bubble. If spitting up seems to be a regular occurrence, my advice would be to try burping more often, in hopes of getting the gas out before more milk is sitting on the gas bubble. Of course, if you think your baby is spitting up a lot, I would advise speaking with you doctor to rule out any more serious medical reasons. If your baby doesn't spit up much like mine, count yourself lucky. I do believe bottle fed babies spit up more due to the extra air they swallow when feeding from a bottle versus the breast.

Some babies spit a lot more than others. My friends' babies spit up after every feed until they started walking!
Sit him up to burp, and keep him upright for 30 minutes after a feed - this may help.
As long as he doesn't spit up the entire feed, and is gaining weight, don't worry and don't wear anything that isn't washable.

if it just spit up no need to worry, now it if projecting out of the babies mouth then you need to take the baby to the ped to have a little check up. Sometimes its reflux, if this is a breastfed baby , the mom might want to elimnate dairy from her diet. My daughter use to spit uo ALOT!!!! it takes about 2weeks to see a diffrence tho, it will take that long to get out of moms system...good luck

It all depends on the child. My daughter spit up occasionally. But i've babysat infants who spit up all the time and some who didn't spit up at all. Like I said it all depends on the child.
