There are so many items/icons in my system tray (is that what it's called, the one located in the right lower corner of the windows desktop?). How do I remove some of them -- the ones I do not use regularly? I don’t want to just hide them, I don’t want unneeded icons to be there. It looks like a mess. Help, please. Thanks.

If it is in the System tray, then unless you do not need the programs you cannot remove them unless they have preferences to turn them off like Quicktime. Otherwise you will have to uninstall the actual whole program. Some you have to put up with, like sound volume, removeable hardware etc.

Select the icon you don't want, hold the left mouse button over it and drag it onto your desktop, right click it, Delete it.
Job Done
