The North.
I would have a chance to serve under Don Carlos Buell in the Army of the Ohio, or George Thomas in the Army of the Cumberland. As far as slavery - I would support abolition.

I would suggest that you read the book by James R. Grossman, titled Land of Hope: Chicago, Black Southerners, and the Great Migration.
From reading that book you will learn what was the Great Migration and what were the conditions in the South that forced the Great Migration to take place. You will learn why the blacks went North. You will learn how the Southern whites felt about the migration to the North. You will learn how Booker T. Washington and Web DuBois viewed the movement to the North. You will learn about the church's role in migration and the feelings behind it.

In the North. A war was just a few years away, and it was
hard times in the South. There was no factories, or business
as there was in the North. Also it was so hot and the women still wore enough clothes to smother a horse.

Well, I don't think my family owned any slaves, but most of the Southerners who fought and died didn't. The war was not totally about slavery; that was just a ploy Lincoln used to keep European countries from becoming involved. (You notice the Emacipation Proclamation was not issued until 2 years after the war started and then only freed slaves in "states in rebellion".) I would choose the South because that's where I was raised and it is what I know.

by some skill the "manly, gallant South" might want to not provide its "gallant" adult males with adequate nutrition, shoes, or uniforms and were defeated militarily through the North. The North already grew to develop right into a superpower through 1865. those info in themselves communicate volumes. extra wishful questioning on the part of yet another believer of the lost reason...

North--there is more money and since slavery is wrong it is better to be in a more tolerant section of the country.
