Tonights Pirates vs Cubs are in a rain delay in the 7th. The Pirates lead 5-2 after 6 innings, and the Cubs scored 4 in the top of the 7th to take the lead. Then came the rain, will the cubs still get the win even though they had an extra at bat, and scored 4 runs as result? It's kind of unfair if so.

Under the rules adopted over the winter, if the game cannot be continued to it's end today, it will be suspended and picked up again at this point immediately prior to the next game between the two teams.

This site:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/index.jsp#20070501

gives a three-day schedule for all MLB games, and it's indicated there.

The rules regarding supsended games are found in 4.12

My understanding is they have a "new" rule which allows the game to be suspended and then completed the next day

Under the old rules, if the game were called, the Pirates would have won the game because as the home team, they have the right to a last at bat. Therefore, the runs scored by the Cubs in the top of the 7th would not count, and the Pirates would have won.

Chow!!

The game will be picked up at 12:35 tomorrow. According to the Wednesday Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (see link), when the visiting team takes the lead in the top of an inning and the game is called before the home team finishes batting in the bottom of the inning, then the game will continue the next time the teams meet.

It would be unfair to not let the Pirates take their at bat. That is why it was suspended because of rain and be taken up tomorrow 25 minutes before the next game. This is new rule this year and not having to play all over again.

They will try to make up the rest of the game sometime later in the season, as it would not be fair to either team. If this is not possible the game would be called at the end of 6 and the Pirates would win.

(Looks like I'm living in the past. Great move by MLB to adopt that rule posted below.)

I agree it's unfair. Isn't the rule to call the game after 5 innings and is not a tie. I thought only a tie could postpone or reschedule a game and only after the 5th inning. I have faith in Bob though. Go Cubs!

Suspended game since it was official and visitors took lead in inning in which game was called. The "new rule" everyone is quoting only applies to tie games and not this situation which has been in the rules book forever.

No, the inning must be complete for it to count. Meaning both the top and the bottom of the inning must be played. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fair for the Pirates.

No, the game will be finished on Wednesday at 12:05. This is a new rule this year.
