One of the answers is that war could be avoided if both countries negotiated. Is there something the US was shown, but not the Soviet Union, or vice versa? Thanks!

I think the Soviet Union was shown the resolve of the very young president, JFK, who was really the unknown factor in the Bay of Pigs crisis. He was the new president - and nobody was really sure how he would react. The world sat and watched and waited to see who would blink first. It turned out that JFK was patient and didnt jump into war. In the end, Russia blinked. Pax - C.

It proved that two nations could destroy the world.

It proved that two leaders could stop the destruction of the world through negotiation.

PS: To "Julie A"--it was not "satellite technology". That was before spy satellites. The proof came from the high-flying U-2 spy plane with very high-tech cameras.
