Use a wet warm washcloth to gently remove the crust, and massage the space between the corner of the eye and the side of the nose. Baby may not enjoy this, but it helps. If your baby is sick, then s/he may need to see the doctor for eyedrops. It sounds like a blocked tear duct though, and time takes care of that, if it doesn't quit by a year of age, then it's time to see a pediatric eye doctor. By massaging the tear duct a few times daily it helps relieve the symptoms by promoting drainage. A blocked tear duct prevents tears from leaving the eyes, and as the water evaporates in the air, it leaves behind the salt found naturally in tears, which turns into the yellow crust and can seal the eyes shut. Good luck!

My baby had a bit of an eye infection when she was first born and the nurses said to wash babies eyes as follows:

Use a warm, wet cotton ball and wipe the eyes gently from the tear duct out, disposing of the cotton ball after each wipe. Repeat with a new clean cotton ball and never use the same cotton ball (or corner of a cloth) on both eyes.

I don't know that your little one has an eye infection, but I think this method is a safe way to clean little eyes regardless.

I know this might come off as being an old wife's tale but trust me...it worked for my son. When he was born he had a red mark on his eye lid. I thought he might have scratched it during birth. Well 1 month later it was still there and his eye would always water and get stuck together during the night. So finally I gave in and asked the Dr. he didn't help any..."just wipe over his eye w/ a warm cloth".Well I did and it still watered and stuck together.Starting to get worried (as all new mothers do),I asked my Grandmother about it.Of course what she told me totally blew my mind...She fixed some warm salt water and told me to drop some in his eye atleast 3 times a day. Note that this was not strong salt water (u couldn't even taste the salt)Yes I tasted it. Anyway...I tried it and behold the d.a.m.n. thing worked!!!So try this it should work for you.Let me know how your little one is doing if you try it.

Unstick child's eyes as instructed by these knowledgable ladies, and put a little vaseline around his eyes before he goes to sleep.[ It will wash out of his clothes/bedding with a pre spotter. ]

Take a soft warm wet washcloth and hold it over their eyes for a few minute to "loosen" it. It will take some time to get it all out and may pull a few eyelashes. Take it slow
