You can put a different type of hard drive in your Dell. In fact, the original one wasn't made by Dell either. If you look at the drive in your system now, it will likely be one of the common hard drive brands (Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor, etc.)
You just need to make sure you get the correct type of connection - SATA or ATA (aka IDE). If it's an older machine (2 years or more) you should also check with Dell to see if there is a maximum size that it will support. Some older systems won't recognize the larger drives that you can get today.

As long as the hard drive is the proper type (ATA, EIDE or SATA) that works with your existing drive controller you will be just fine.
Remember to set the drive's jumpers properly if automatic cable selection isn't available.
TIP:
Usually Dell puts the Hard Drive on the primary controller as the "Master" and the CD/DVD as the "Slave."
This means that your new drive will need to go on the 2nd controller as the "Master."
Once you're in WIndows, partition and format your new drive.

If there is space for one more hard drive in your PC's case, you could install one as slave drive. Otherwise, you may have to replace your existing one w/ a bigger capacity drive. Hard drives are cheap nowadays. Buy one NOW!
