Depends on how much you want to spend. You can upgrade the hardware (get a new motherboard/cpu/cpu fan/ram). NOTE: This will probably force you to eventually upgrade the hard drive as well as a graphics card later on.
If you keep up with maintenance (run a defragmenter program, ad-aware, antivirus and run disk cleanup), then it might be good enough until you can replace the whole thing.

Knowing specifically what type of processor you have and the age of your computer, will give you an idea of your socket type and what compatible models and types it will allow. Say for instance you have a celron d 478 socket CPU, a Pentium 4 ,478 will make a huge difference. Upgrading from one generation to a next is not worth the time or money! CPUs have changed alot over the years. You will have to upgrade the motherboard, which means newer more expensive RAM, a new power supply, a new heat sink and fan, which could even lead to a new tower. Guess what , you just built a newer older computer, all for the sake of saving an old and slower hard and smaller hard drive and an outdated optical drive! You will be better off just getting a new computer. However, one of the best ways to speed up a sluggish computer is to upgrade on RAM. If you have XP, I won't go any lower on 512 MB . A broadband connection helps too!

Upgrade your motherboard, processor and memory. If you have a Pentium-3, you are a running a CPU architecture that is many dozens, if not hundreds of times slower than current CPU architecture.

yea a lot of good answers here.. you can upgrade your memory for a cheap boost of speed.. and like that other fellow said disable your start up programs that are running in the background slowing or eating up processor time..
a simple way to see what is running in your background and how much mem in usage is hit your alt ,ctrl, delete, key one time..and then you can see what all is running ,apps, and system files, this is a kewl way to see if you have a virus as well, by looking at your system files if you see something that your not familiar with you can kill it..and then remove it.. as you may know trying to delete the file while it is not killed is impossible..here you can kill it and then search for it ..and delete it..good luck..

Ever heard of "Over-Clocking" ?
But, 1st of all, ur motherboard must b good enough to support new processor. Eg. Duo 2 Core (that means double 2 core) If the single core speed is 1.5 GHz, in this system, it's about 5.5 to 6 GHz. If u can "Over-clocking"it, maybe u can get 8 to 10 GHz. Fast ??
