Looking to make a home made lid - or purchase a cheap/used lid. Have looked on ebay with no luck.

I need a new lid, not simply a cover. A lid consists of styrofoam approxiamtely 6 inches thick.

Your best bet would be to buy a solar cover like they use at hotels. They are only about $20 - $40 depending on size. See at the link below.

Go to Menard's and purches plastic styrofoam its about 12 bucks for a 4"x 4'x8' sheet get as much as needed . Then go to Wal-Mart fabric shop and purches plastic table cloth material. You can sew it together or use hot clue. If your not concerned about price go to a awning company and purches canvice. That ya have to sew.
