Stars, as in astronomical bodies that you see in the night sky? Or the one I think you mean, as in "super stars"?

I think the reason people like stars is based on the human tendency to imitate. People want people they can look up to. Stars provide a perfect model for everyone else: rich, famous, popular. You can "figure out" what to do with your life just by grabbing a magazine and following the instructions therein. Also people like beauty... they gravitate towards it, we were built to appreciate it. Hence the giant market for gorgeous people. Unfortunately many people often gravitate towards the wrong things, and that can cause problems.

However, ambition is not necessarily a bad thing. I just hope humanity will realize the right thing to aspire to.

Who are stars? What do they do?
Stars are charismatic people who have perfected an art, an ideal, or simply gifted in some popular human endeavor in which they are masters/celebrities. Stars come in many forms/professions, for example, Nicole Kidman, Sidney Crosby,Ronaldinho, Jamie Foxx, etc
Why do people want stars?
Stars are admired because of their proficiency and mastery in their art. Hence many people want to emulate them as role models. The artistry is not always positive in ethical terms. Even the art of lying about threats of non-existent WMDs requires propagandist artists. Hence, circumstances also often churn out stars!
