You're talking about the period of time BETWEEN the second and third Crusades.
The 1170s and 1180s saw the rise of a new, united Islamic state with Egypt as its center, led by the talented Turkish general, Saladin. Provoked by Christian aggression in the Holy Land, Saladin attacked and reconquered much of the Christian territory in the east including Jerusalem. Jerusalem's fall provoked the launching of a Third Crusade (1189-92).
Jerusalem was never recaptured by the Christian crusaders....the third crusade ended badly, because of the political struggle in England between Richard the lion Hearted and Phillip Augustus of France.
Check the link below...it gives a short, concise history of ALL the Crusades. Nice question, but LOADS of history!

Well, they were there for a lot of years; long enough to build castles and cities anyway; but ultimately they were defeated in battle, whether on open ground or sieges. They were kind of isolated among Arab nations and local populations and weren't really good neighbors. It could take months or years to notify ones home country if one needed help and more months before help arrived, assuming it ever did, which, in the end, it didn't. I think this power struggle went back and forth, which is why there was more than one crusade. Ultimately I guess the economics and difficulties of the situation became apparent so crusading went out of fashion.

The crusades were mostly a defeat. But the first crusades were successful. The Muslims were really better warriors and they may have declared Jihad to really psyche themselves.
But the crusaders didn't fight to invade but to regain their land.
