I've seen that it is best to divide perennials in early spring or fall but I was wondering if it was too late (May 1st) now that we're nearing summer temperatures.

Theoretically, Cat's right -- but daylillies are pretty darn hard to kill, and I have divided them spring/summer/fall and had no losses at all.

You can divide in spring or fall.

If you divide in spring, I would do it early - when they are just a few inches tall. The transplant shock is less if there are fewer leaves up top. If they are already so tall that they're budding (or the plants are over 8 or so inches tall), I would wait until fall. It would be possible to do it, but it would be hard on them, and would take a lot more effort to see them through healthy.

Most all perennials can be moved or divided so long as you can water them after you've divided and transplanted them you can do it at any time.

Both of these species are especially easy to grow and transplant.

For the day lillies they are starting to get big now, it should have been done a few weeks ago.

I would think you can get away with it now, but I wouldn't delay any more. Let me say, that I'm not expert on this, but that is my opinion right or wrong. good luck
