If you had to live in either st.louis or detroit, ( #1 and # 2 on the highest crime rated cities in the U.S.) considering that detroit is really been doing bad lately with losing a lot of jobs and st.louis has been gaining population and is starting a complete renovation of downtown st.louis, and is gaining back upper-class residents.

I live in STL, and I honestly have no clue why it was rated #1 most dangerous city. I love it here, I've been to Detroit and it's so much worse. In St.Louis, you just have to pick a nice place to live, like Ladue or North county or something, there is only one area where it's kind of bad. I'm not just saying this so I can make my home city look good, I honestly from the bottom of my heart think it is one of the best places to live. It's just like every city in the U.S, good all around, but that one little area that causes trouble.

My knowledge of Detroit is as offhand and probably superficial as others would likewise have about St. Louis, but I'd lean towards St. Louis, probably. People are doing the urban renovation thing with lofts and the like everywhere (I'd have to assume probably in Detroit, too), but it's definitely happening in a lot of places in St. Louis. In terms of crime, it's all a matter of where you go, and what neighborhoods. Not hard to play by ear at all, and neighborhoods with crime problems are usually concentrated and easy to avoid (that is, if you want to - aren't those always the edgiest neighborhoods in every city?)

Keeping in mind that the City of St. Louis and the primarily suburban St. Louis County are two very different creatures and both considered part of "St. Louis," there's an online crime database of St. Louis City (but not the county) that would come in handy for where to watch out for if home shopping:

Without knowing a whole lot about Detroit, I'd say St. Louis. There are some pretty nice neighborhoods, and if you stay out of the bad ones you're all right.

I do not live in St. Louis. However, I follow St. Louis sports teams. I have not been to Detroit. I've been to St. Louis a few times and have had a pleasant experience, so I would rather live in St. Louis.

As far as violence, I think a lot of it depends on which part of St. Louis you live in.

I remember Manny Legace (former Red Wings goalie) mention that when he first came to St. Louis he was surprised to hear people say hi to him on the street.
