I would interview my wife's dad. He passed away 17 years ago. At first he did not like his 17 year old baby girl dating a 24 year old divorced man, and I don't blame him. But on the day he died he gave me something I will never forget. We were sitting on the front porch of his house. He never said much to anybody and even less to someone like me. As we sat there he gave me a look and a smile. It was a haunting look, like he knew he was going to die. He gave me a look like he wanted to say,''Take good care of my baby.'' As we sat there he fiddled a bit with his thumbs as we talked about the weather or something mundane like that. There was an awkward silence. Then he patted me on the knee as he was getting up. He stood there looking at me for just a few seconds and it was a wonderful, peaceful, sincere look. As he turned to walk away I felt like I had finally reached him, but I was wrong. It was him who finally reached me. He finally understood I loved his daughter and it was OK to let go because he knew I would take care of her.
If he were alive today I would ask him a very simple yet profound question. ''Have I treated and loved your daughter to your standards?''
He was a man with little to say yet a look said all he needed. His standards were high as they should have been. I just hope he understood before he died that his daughter was my angel.
