set it equal to zero:
x^2 + 2x + 3x + 8 - 4 = 0
x^2 + 5x + 4 = 0
find two numbers that add to 5 and multiply to 4:
(4 and 1)
(x + 4)(x + 1) = 0
x + 4 = 0, x = -4
x + 1 = 0, x = -1

x^2 + 2x + 8 = 4 - 3x
x^2 + 5x + 4=0
Factor (x +4)(x+1)=0
x +4=0 or x+1 =0 This is because in order 2 get a product of zero you hav 2 multiply by zero
x= -4 or x= -1

x = - 4 or - 1. How? :
The equation can be simplified, to become x^2 + 5 x + 4 = 0.
It factorizes: (x + 4)(x + 1) = 0.
Therefore x = - 4 or - 1.
CHECK BY USING ORIGINAL EQUATION (very important)! :
For x = - 4, LHS = 16 - 8 + 8 = 16; RHS = 4 + 12 = 16. Good.
For x = - 1, LHS = 1 - 2 + 8 = 7; RHS = 4 + 3 = 7. That checks!
So the roots x = - 4 and - 1 INDEED satisfy the original equation.
Live long and prosper.
