i'm having trouble understanding this concept.
for example, why is HF a weak acid, and why is HNO3 a strong one?

It gets more complicated when you get into organic chemistry and you'll learn about other strong acids and bases when you take it, but as ar as general chemistry is concerned, there are 6 strong acids and 8 strong bases. Memorize them. All other acids and bases are considered weak.

Strong acids:
HNO3 - nitric acid
HCl - hydrochloric acid
H2SO4 - sulfuric acid
HClO4 - perchloric acid
HBr - hydrobromic acid
HI - hydroiodic acid

Strong bases:
LiOH - lithium hydroxide
NaOH - sodium hydroxide
KOH - potassium hydroxide
RbOH - rubidium hydroxide
CsOH - cesium hydroxide
Ca(OH)2 - calcium hydroxide
Sr(OH)2 - strontium hydroxide
Ba(OH)2 - barium hydroxide

Acids and bases are considered strong or weak based on their dissociation constants (a measure how much they dissociate in water.) The strong acids and bases will almost completely dissociate in water. HF is not considered a strong acid because fluorine is a highly electronegative element, and therefore does not want to give up the hydrogen. As a result it doesn't dissociate as easily.

Strong acids can "handle" a negative charge more easily than do weak acids. Remember, when the H+ detaches, the rest of the molecule has a negative charge. The nitrate ion can shift the negative charge around to each oxygen. The fluoride ion being from the smallest halogen, has the least ability to handle the charge.

jusr dont try punching on a wall it will hurt really because I tried it to impress a girl but then I get factured so punch where u want but not on a wall ok?? and if u want to know then there is a gadget punch on that very hard as u can and it will tell u how strong u r !!
