I'm debating between a computer with an AMDAthlon 64 X2, 5200+; or an Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 / 2.13 GHz. If I am going to be doing some average gaming and also a bit of video and music of course, which one should I get? I dont want to get the Intel and later realize its going to suck for gaming, or whatever else its for. I heard AMD's are good for gaming, but whats really going on?
If I get the AMD am I going to be disappointed I didn't get the Intel? The debate is between these two particular processors only.

for what you'll be doing you won't really notice a difference. Both AMD and Intel make excellent chips. I have used both over the years. Both of the cpu's you have listed are really close in performance. It seems the AMD chip is about $20 cheaper for retail right now so the price difference is negligable. No programs are made for either AMD or Intel cpus that won't function equally well on a similar chip of the other type. What I'm trying to say is choose the best deal for you.

The bare-bones answer to your question is this: No, it doesn't matter.

I'm willing to bet you that a solid 90% of the population out there doesn't even know what an 'AMD' is, and only know what Intel is because of the Mac commercials.

On a technical standpoint, just get what you can afford. If you can get more AMD than Intel, the go for it. The games that you're playing aren't going to know the difference, why should you?

the only difference is in the costs of the chips. Unless you are doing SERIOUS math number crunching then there is a difference (Intel). I have sold and used AMD since 95 and have been very happy with them.

I think Intel is more widely popular and distributed in a wide range of computers compared to AMD, therefore I would expect more things to be made specifically for it.
