Since you use your toes for balance, walk you still walk without them? Or are there critical ones that you need more than others?

The large toe (big toe) is needed most for balance and walking. If you are only missing one toe, it is possible to walk; however, if you are missing all toes, walking barefoot would be very difficult but possible for short distances. You can try this by walking on your heals w/ your toes up in the air- it's very feasible.. doubt you'd want to walk a mile like that though.

The big toe is key if you lose it you will have to learn how to walk again and you will never have the same balance and ability that you had pre-big toe.

I think it would be hard to walk with out toes, since like you said they are used to keep balance. It'll probably be weird walking with out that support that the toes give. The toes are specially designed to withstand our weight, and make us move freely about with balance. With out them, we would probably fall over and find it really, really, hard to walk. We would probably have to twist our feet to walk.

It's certainly most efficient to walk with toes, however, some people walk with artificial limbs. No toes there.
