any printer will work on your computer, they usually coem with the software to install to make them work so you shouldnt worry about getting any specific one.

if your just going to get one to print work out, then just go for a basic one.
if you want to print pictures or photo's get a printer with a higher DPI. (the higher the dpi (dots per inch) the better the picture quality)

also make sure when you buy a printer you check how much the ink costs for when it finishes.

It can be any brand.

What you want depends on what you are going to use it for.

Inkjets print colour cheaper than lasers, but are generally slower and more expensive for black and white.

Dye sublimation printers produce beautiful photos, but are usually slower, more expensive or limited in the paper size.

More expensive printers tend to be faster, produce better images, have extra features like printing on both sides of the paper.

If you have multiple computers at home, then you can get printers with built in wired or wireless networking. (Although if the one you really want does not have this you can buy an extra module to do this.)

You need to decide what you want to print.
How fast you want it to print.
What level of quality you want in the print.
How much you want to spend.
Are any other features (networking. duplex, over sized paper) important to you.

Unless you are lucky you will probably have to compromise on something.

Once you know that, then Cnet.com is a reasonable place to look at reviews and ratings.

Finally when you do buy it, remember to get any cables you need. The printer market is so cut-throat that they usually save a couple of $$ by not including a USB cable. Make sure the cable you get will reach where the printer is going to end up.

Virtually any printer will run on any PC. Look on your PC, do you have a rather long socket with lots of pins? This wold be a 'Parallel Port' Do you have USB sockets? Printers may have either, generally USB.
After that, What are you going to do with printer? Print Photos or just as a general printer. Photo cabable printers will do both.
Are Running costs a concern? Aside manufacturers cartridges you can get refilled carts. Or, you could refil them yourself (can be messy) Or, you can investigate "Continuous Ink Supply System" Costs in order...downwards... Manufacturers carts, then refilled carts, then refill yourself, then cheapest, Continuous Ink.
My choice, Continuous ink Supply System. Havnt touched my carts for 18 months, printed 1000+photos, and a few handbooks.
What I would do is search for which printers you can use a continuous ink system on (epson, cannon). From that list, select your printer on the type of connector (USB/Parallel) on your PC, what you want it to do for photo, you will need at least a '6 colour printer'. The world is your oyster.....

No. The printer can be of any brand/kind. It all depends on your needs. Will you be printing pictures? If so, you would probably want to get a color printer. If you're just using it to print text, get a black white printer.

No you don't need to buy the same brand as your computer, the ones I would definatly stay away from is the HP all in ones
I noticed the other day that Lexmark printers were selling for about $20.00 in Walmart
I would go with that one, it's easy to install
