Ok...so I have decided to tech myself french so that I can skip French I next year and go directly to French II. But I need a book that can help me learn. I found one in the library, but it just has all of the words and their definitions with very very little(few paragraphs after every page) explanation. I cant form sentences and skip French one with this book! Plus, most of the words are "I want to buy that for less" or "Its too expensive" or something along those touristy lines. Anyone else taught themselves french? What book did u use

I'm sure you can find something online for free.
I'm French and I'm learning Mandarin Chine online with the BBC site.
Check them out, they have all the languages.
Here is the link I found for French (which I never used since I am French)

You have tons of free websites in France for foreigners to learn French. It's free and pretty good if you have a good helmet and sound system. All the French government wants is that the foreigners will speak French...easier for everybody.

You also have website like about.com with grammatical help and really tons of website out there. Just do not pay for anything because then, it would be a rip off since everything is available online for free, given out by different governments.

Is skipping French I really the best option for you? There is a lot of stuff you learn. Is it possible for you to borrow a book from the French professor so you know the stuff they went over?

you need both a dictionary and a lesson book. you need something that is not touristy and that has real lessons in it. check your local bookstore. sorry i cannot recommend something specific, but just go to the bookstore and browse a bit.
