Worldwide, the highest magnitute eartquake ever recorded occurred in Chile on May 22, 1960 measuring 9.5 on the Richter Scale.

In the United States, the largest recorded event was the Good Friday earthquake in Southcentral Alaska on March 27, 1964. The epicenter was 80 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska. It was recoded as a 9.2 event and lasted 5 minutes, and caused tsnumamis in Valdez, Seward and Kodiak. It resulted in over 130 fatalities and property damage in the billions. At the western end of Turnagain Arm, especially near the old townsite of Portage, the evidence is clear. The earth sank about 7 feet in this area and seawater flooded the land, killing the trees along the coastline. Still today, these dead trees stand out from the wetlands like skeletons.

Chile in 1960, and off Sumatra in 2003. Both were around 9.

I am certain the Ritcher measurement is not accurate enough to say which was the biggest, or to definitely specify any decimal places.

I didn;t think the Anchorage 1964 earthquake was a 9. I thought it was 8.something. But again, I don;t believe seismologists would bet $1000 on which of the three was really the biggest. Each produced massive tsunami, but of course the 2003 one was the worst in terms of the casualities.

I think it was the Humbolt fault in Nebraska back in the early 1800's. It was so powerful it rang church bells in Pennsylvania and made the Mississippi River flow backwards for a while. Of course this was before the Richter Scale and the Siesmograph were invented.

Other huge earthquakes include the San Francisco quake of 1906, the Lisbon quake of 1755 and the T'ana-shan earthquake in China (1976).

9.5 at Chilly in the year 1960. The Richter scale was invented in the year 1935. Therefore if any earthquake happened before that can not be estimated. 9.3 was recorded on the day of Tsunami that was on 26th Dec 2004. I have very simple and reliable instrument called earthquake alarm designed by me was available in my house. 2 hours before Tsunami struck our Indian coast I have reported this incident as I have sensed very big earthquake which I have never heard in the history of earthquake.People ignored my warning.
