I'm just wondering if he died thinking he found a new trade route to India. I also wanted to know why Columbus is celebrated for "finding" America when it wasn't lost in the first place.

To the reply about Columbus finding India because the people still call themselves Indians--The United States is not India and yes the "Indians" call themselves Indian, but he was in what is now the Americas and obviously mistakenly called the indigeneous groups Indian. This is what I was asking about. I do agree with the statement about whites colonizing and writing history that suits them. Thanks!

Christopher Columbus made four voyages to America. On his first two he was able to reach only islands. On his third voyage he reached what would become South America and on his fourth voyage he reached what would become Central America. On the third and fourth voyages he did not believe he had reached another continent. He died thinking he had been in Asia.

He did find India because he called the people Indians and people still call natives Indians. As for the second part of your question; its because white people colonized America and write and teach history. History is written from a person's point of view so its very narrow thinking, if gods could write history it would be more true and less of a one sided myth.

Of course he knew, he was just an early example of the political propaganda machine at work. Well it was either that or the queen would have his head so he lied out of both sides of his face. The only consolation is that America ended up being named after someone else in spite of Columbus "finding" it.

NO he didn't, even at the end of his life he thought he had been at or around Asia or India.

good question!!! I think when he found America, he found it for the Europeans because they probably didn't know it existed.

yes i think he knew; he went on to make more voyages, i believe. and it was--and is--quite common for folks to think they discovered something that wasn't new, but it was new to them, and they wanted to stake their claim to it.
