Why don't they simply tell the president that he can't have any more money or support for his 'failed, lost' war, and he will get no funding til he pulls the troops out? Or could they be a bit nervous about the political fallout of such a bold move? Aren't ALL the 'American people' behind them as they imply in their claims and pompous announcements?

To Jon S: The Viet Nam conflict started with JFK and was massively escalated by LBJ and robert mcnamara (all democrats). Nixon bowed to pressure from the commie peace movement (embraced by the dems) and ended our involvement there. Please review your history next time.

1. No, not all of the people are behind them, but a few are.

2. Even those who want the war to end know that it is cruel to simply unfund soldiers who are in the field. Is it your intention to starve them in a foreign nation?

3. Just "telling the president" doesn't solve anything.

Even if all the American people wanted the Dems to do that, and they shouldn't, it would be a rotten thing to do to the troops. We're talking about money for their food, supplies and munitions. They need to be funded as long as they're over there. It was wrong for the President to veto that bill, but since he has, it would much worse for the Dems to play games with our troops lives for too long. If they need money, give it to them.

Every politician claims they are the voice of the American people because that's who voted them in. They can't just pull funding because it's logistically impossible to pull out immediately for the first reason, the second if they did try to pull out then they're culpable for the whole mess. They're putting pressure on the Republicans so that if it messes up, the Republicans get the blame. Vietnam was started by a Republican and a Democratic congress pulled the plug and was the last one to touch it and therefore to blame for our shame.

You are 100% right. If the Dems had any guts whatsoever they would just pull the plug on the whole war but they are scared that Bush might let US troops suffer by not pulling the troops out ASAP which would make the Dems look really, really bad & that's the last thing they want to happen.

They already know what the fallout will be. They'd be screwed as soon as troops started getting hit hard on the way out( which is what will happen)

This is strictly for the presidential run in 08.They gotta keep their base hyped on what they believe their base wants so everyone will vote Dems in 08.

I truly believe their quest for total power has no conscience. If they could win by having troops killed on the way out, I believe they wouldn't care. They have as much as said that a bad war is good for them and will get them votes.

At present, they know they do not have the votes to override a veto. If they did and it went through. they would put their collective fingers to the wind and find out if they would change their stance or not in the face of a pull out attack disaster.

The claim that all of the American people are behind them is false. The Democrats are using the American Troops as pawns to win more seats in the Senate and possibly the Presidency in '08. They do not have half the back bone that this President has and will not cut funding to the war. They have a very liberal media supporting them and feel that they can turn this mess into support for the Democratic Party. Personally, I think this may all backfire on them, but who knows?

The Democrats have never been for the people and in this case there wasn't even enough Democrats for this bill to overide a veto!! They loaded the bill up with everything they could think of and it backfired. And yes, they are looking at elections in 2008 and this didn't help them one bit!

They do speak for the American people.

The American people are flip flopping.

What they want, they are not willing to put right out front and on the line, taking the risks, taking fire and hurting feelings.

Americans need to strengthen our spines here.

Stand for something, or continue to fall for every republican thing.
