He probably got confused about who you are. Maybe you should ask him to review your grades.

I think it was fine that you asked. An A- is indicative of excellent work. Try not to worry too much about it and ask another professor. At least he was up front about it rather than giving you a lousy recommendation. Still, he sounds a bit odd...

He did you a favor by telling you how he felt, rather than writing a kneecapping negative recommendation. What he's really telling you is that grades are B.S. in your school and that you might have learned more in his class. Why don't you ask him to explain exactly what he had in mind?

you did the right thing. with every action we take, we run certain risks of failure or rejection. thats the fun in tryin in the first place, not knowing how it will go. well the worse that could happen did, so now move on and look elsewhere for your recommendation.
good luk with the program!!
p.s. its better to do sumthin and regret it, than to regret not doing sumthin

Ask a different professor. If he doesn't want to recommend you, don't force him.

well maybe he just doesnt like you i hade a teacher who judges u on your characterlike i get A's in his class but he's an ASSHOLE i mean in class he'll single me out and ask me am i taking notes and am i paying attention and that irritates me so i tell him about himself and he wrote me a recomendation with bad things to say about me so my dad talked to him and said how come u have bad things to say but he's passing and he said we'll see about that so the next semester i got an F+ in his class when i earned al least a B+orA- so ask not the teachers whose class your passing ask the ones who you like and like you(or you think)

Go and ask recommendation from someone higher than him or go to your principal.
