guess only the si-fi writers did lol
I remember getting our first tv at 15 - b/w of course - and now we have a screens in all the rooms - large screen digital and computer + laptop - and we didn't even have a phone in those days, let alone a mobile lol
but as for the world as a whole - its not better is it - still have starvation and wars and now global warming - lets hope we all make more effort in the future to save our planet!

This old geezer was always a geek, and somehow when I was still in grade school I anticipated credit and debit cards and the interstate highway system and so forth.

I have learned that the next innovation will be hailed as the solution to all our problems, and then it will turn into something not originally anticipated. Consider interstate highways; original thought was that no one would use them for in-city commuting (huh!).

As for the world turning out the way it is beyond technology, I think it's far below expectations. We did have that heady peace 'n love generation, which then shaved and got suits and turned into yuppies and Reagan democrats. The USA was making enormous inroads in selling our culture to the world--in the 1990s, the #1 TV show in much of the Middle East was "Baywatch"--and if that trend had continued, more and more people in Iran and Iraq and Egypt and even Saudi Arabia would have kept becoming more attracted to (and yes, sometimes jealous of) the USA and our liberty and prosperity. Instead we barged into Iraq like a drunk who already lost one fight and wants another, and put those goals back about four decades.

So win some, lose some.

Being a sci-fi fan, I was looking forward to some of the technology that we have today. I have been dismayed at what part greed has played in much of it. The most surprising innovation was the transistor. No one figured on something like that. It has made for an electronic revolution.

The space program, though, has been a big disappointment. Except for greed amd timidity, we would already have a base on Mars and the Moon would be a civilian destination. Most any widely traveled person would have visited one of the space stations. Yes, one. There should already be several.

When we were kids, we saw the future. The Batmobile had a screen that showed your position on a map. Dick Tracy had a portable wrist phone. There was the infamous "Batphone"car phone. James Bond carried a portable computer that could communicate wirelessly with the main hub in England. Star Trek featured a typewriter in one episode that could recognize speech. Captain Kirk carried the first flip phone. On the original Star Trek series, music and data was stored chips that slid into the chip reader. Someone just copied all these ideas and made some money off them.

I knew the technology would be really advanced but the price for them is too steep. Look at the pollution, the vices of our societies and people, our trees gone, pollution popping up over night like fungus. You would think with all this new technology that they would use it to help our weary planet and make it a better place to live. But look at the crimes, the disrespectful children these days, it is hard to find a nice child to smile at. The computer at our time was suppose to be amazing and save time but people can do so much now they doing more than they should. sighs, I don't know what the world will come to now.

No. When I was a child I found the world to be safe and secure. The most we had to worry about was the Russians dropping an atomic bomb on us. When I was in high school, the computers were huge and you had to use cards with holes punched on them. Personal computers had not been invented yet. Which is better? I wish I could return to the days before terrorism came to our country. I would miss, however, the technology, such as personal computers that make life more interesting as it is today.

I'm 56, when I was 22 a computer at Oregon State U. took up a block sized building and 2 floors, it was one computer, a main frame. Now, how in the world could we imagine that by 2006 we could hold one in our hands. like the blackberry and cell phone. Could you imagine that a computer could go from that building to a size that fits into your hand in 30 years ? Unbelievable. Technology and greed have screwed up the world as far as I'm concerned and I;m glad I'm old, I'm ready to get away from this frustrating world. It is so different from the nice 50's when I lived, the last age of innocence.

I am not one to try to picture the future. I am a "take one day at a time" person. Then Whamo!! here we are today. lol Now, I just sorta let the world flow by because I cannot do alot about it anyway. I have a dear friend 90 years old and we often talk about modern technology. (and shake out heads) :-)

No, thank goodness! It is a lot better than the scare-mongerers (ie: Catholic school teachers and priests) tried to scare us into believing.

For years in my youth I thought there was no hope for humanity because I thought for sure the world was going to blow itself up in a nuclear war. This is what my grade 7 teacher actually told us! For years I envisioned no future for myself as an adult. I never envisioned a future for myself past 30. I didn't want to have children who would be killed.

I am relieved to have discovered that I create my own reality and mine includes living well into a ripe old age with peace and harmony! :)

Hi Kid ... I thought the world would be far more advanced than it is now ... in both science , ethics ,and technology . I thought space travel would be a norm and undersea farming well established. I thought world famine would be old history by now . I thought our schools would be vastly improved ( they actually went backwards) and the war on drugs would be won . Looks like we left you with a big mess... good luck cleaning it all up ...you'll need it .
