We ended the war and shut down the camps once we found them towards the end of the war.

When I was growing up in the 1970s the common view was that the U.S., and esp. the Roosevelt Administration had blood on its hands because it did not care about or do anything about the Holocaust, at least until the liberation of concentration camps at the end of WWII. But if you listened carefully you found there were pieces of evidence that did not quite fit this scenario.

Fortunately, some who have studied the evidence have challenged this view. The best example I know of (just found it on our public library's shelves a couple of weeks ago!) is Robert Rosen's book *Saving the Jews: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Holocaust* (2006) examines Roosevelt's response.

The book now has a web page, which will give you a summary of his conclusions, and brief answers to some of the most often repeated charges, e.g., the story of the S.S. St Louis (which the book explores in some detail).

Note: this does not completely exonerate the American public, much of which was hesitant to do anything, though we cannot chalk it all up to anti-Semitism -- American isolationism (a common factor in American politics) played a major role, and it, along with pacifism, was running very strong after WWI (BEFORE Hitler's rise to power) . Also, it is not true that we didn't know anything about Hitler's designs against the Jews until we got to the concentration camps (as the first answer may suggest), though we certainly did NOT know his full plans (esp at the beginning of the war, long before we entered it) or just how far he had gone.
