Depends on the shape of the lot, where the house is situated on the lot, and where the neighbors are situated on their lots. If everyone is in the middle of a 50' x 900' lot, you'll be able to hear them sneeze.
One acre is a pretty good sized house lot, but it's not huge. Most lots are 1/2 acre in congested areas, and 3/4 acres in suburban subdivisions. Older, city neighborhoods are 1/4 acre lots or smaller. Corner lots are usually 1 acre. I live 600' from the road, and I can hear the people across the street when the windows are open. I hear every car going up the road, too.

You may hear them BBQing, or their kids playing in the yard, but be thankful in some areas an acre of land is unheard of. I grew out in the country on a dairy farm, we had 475 acres, now I live in a house where we have only a 1/4 an acre. What I'd give to be back on the farm.
Have a great day!

In some areas a building lot is 1/8 acre. Your neighbors are a question of how loud they are.

Its a pretty good size lot. As for hearing your neighbors, it depends on how loud they are, but at least you have space between your house and your neighbors, unlike most subdivisions which you can almost reach out your window and shake hands with your neighbor through their window.

An acre is plenty big enough. We have a little over an acre and have a new house and we still have plenty to mow.
