american idol numbers?

why did each contestant on american idol have two different numbers? I thought I heard Ryan say that they were going to sing twice, but that didn't happen. So what was with the two different numbers for each contestant?

Idol has bought or rented a phone bank with a certain amount of phone numbers (enough to cover the initial 12 contestants). When the contestants get down to 6, there are enough phone numbers to give each one 2. That makes it easier for us to vote, but keep in mind that the number of votes translates directly into the number of viewers which translates to advertising dollars! The more votes, the more Idol can say watch the show, thus the more they can charge for commercials! Pretty smart.

Once they get down to fewer contestants they give them each 2 numbers so people can vote more. It also is a chance for the lines to be free more often. They should start singing two songs each pretty soon though. It usually starts in the top 4 so look for it next week most likely.

They do this every time they get down to 5 or 6. When they get down to 3 they will each have 3 #'s.

Having more than one phone line lowers the amount that the lines get full.
