what is the mechanism that starts the ignition in a lawn mower engine and how does it work. I have one that you pull a cord and it starts.

There is a magneto which generates a high voltage electric current, when the flywheel turns. As you pull, this current goes to the spark plug. Gas mixed with air in the carburetor has been admitted to the cylinder through the intake valve- the valve closes, the piston travels up to compress the gas/air; At the critical moment the plug fires and voila! spark ignites the mixture and down goes the piston as the mixture burns... As the piston is driven down, the exhaust valve opens and out goes the burn gas/air.

All four stroke engines operate the same basic way. As the piston moves down, it draws a fuel air mixture into the cylinder, as the piston continues and move up, the fuel air mixture is compressed. When the piston is somewhere near top dead center, a spark is initiated across the electrodes of the spark plug. In a lawn mower, the spark is made by a magneto, basically a big rotating magnet. The piston is pushed down by the explosion of the fuel air mixture and after traveling down, it will push the exhaust out on the upstoke. This is all made possible by valves in the top of the cylinder opened and closed by a camshaft. Fuel is introduced by the carburetor.

You pull the cord to start it, but there's a spark plug in there. The cord activates the starter which creates the spark.

its called a magneto ,as the magnetic field in the flywheel passes over the one in the magneto it creates a ele. current that powers the spark plug
