it's very bright and only comes by every 75years so it's a once in a lifetime event

It is a combination of factors, namely (1) it is bright, and thus visible by many people; (2) it has a 75 year period and thus can theoretically be seen by everyone at least once in their lifetime; and (3) it has returned reliably for many hundreds of years and it therefore shows up regularly in historical records.
